(98 NR) 1991 Iran Abbas Kiarostami, director
Opens Jun 20
Reel Conversations is Art Theatre’s new recurring film program, replacing the former Art11 series beginning June 2026.

Presented once a month, with an additional Sunday replay, the series uses cinema as a catalyst for shared reflection, audience engagement, and community dialogue .Each event is anchored by a recurring moderator who provides continuity across the series and helps foster an inviting, conversational atmosphere from month to month. While reading a novel by Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf on the bus, Ali Sabzian strikes up a conversation with a pretty girl, Mahrokh Ahankhah.

When she tells him her family admires Makhmalbaf's work, Ali pretends to be the filmmaker to impress her.

Becoming friendly with the Ahankhahs, Ali tells them he is preparing a new movie, but when they uncover his true identity, he is arrested for fraud.

This film reenacts the true story of the incident, with Ali and the family playing themselves. As a part of our Reel Conversations film series, this film is FREE to Art Theatre Members! Supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture as well as the Arts council of Long Beach, the City of Long Beach, Port of Long Beach and the California Arts Council, a state agency.
